    About the College

Message from Dean Kara Rabbitt

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences offers seventeen major and minor programs in our eleven departments, each designed to prepare students for effective citizenship and productive careers in a changing world. Our programs are in constant renewal, incorporating the latest developments in our disciplines as we create new course offerings and opportunities for student engagement. Our faculty come from some of the most prestigious Ph.D.-granting institutions in the nation and include many Fulbright fellows and recipients of other honors. Dedicated teacher-scholars, our professors strive to mentor students in working toward degree completion and in preparing themselves to succeed in the job market or pursuing advanced study.

The distinction of our academic programs has been recognized by nationally competitive awards and grants from the U.S. Department of Education, among others. In addition to its prestigious programs, the College houses the Center for the Study of Critical Languages, the first such center in the state, which supports innovative programming and teacher preparation activities in Asian, Middle Eastern, and other priority languages. The College also serves the region through events such as the annual foreign language poetry recitation contest, New Jersey national history day, the Jefferson lecture, the regional writers' conference, the annual Teaching Asia conference, programming around current issues in public policy and international affairs, and women's history presentations.

We cultivate a supportive, student-oriented learning community. We encourage students to explore double major and minor options or to participate in honors tracks, the cluster program, study-abroad experiences, or our pre-law program. Membership in national honor societies is also available to students in anthropology, English, French, geography, history, philosophy, political science, psychology, sociology, Spanish, and women's and gender studies. Many departments also provide exciting research and internship opportunities, as well as departmental colloquium series. We encourage student research and community engagement, with opportunities for students to publish original work in student journals, to present research on campus and at regional conferences, to participate in a career-shadowing day with College alumni, and to work closely with faculty in research and community-outreach projects.

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences is dedicated to the primacy of the liberal arts in higher education and to the advancement of knowledge. Its programs provide insight into the past and explore answers for the future. We serve all William Paterson University students through our strong engagement with the University Core Curriculum, providing key offerings in foundational areas and in diversity and justice, community and civic engagement, and global awareness. With an ongoing commitment to quality and innovative pedagogical practice, the College values experiential learning, interdisciplinary opportunities, and international perspectives. Humanities and Social Sciences strives to prepare students with the research, communication and analytical skills integral to building careers, pursuing advanced academic studies, and cultivating responsible citizenship in an increasingly global and diverse world.
