The Cotsakos College of Business offers business degree programs catering to a diverse student body. Students of all majors may become involved in numerous Experiential Learning opportunities, including internships, practicums, and job shadowing.

Mission

With a faculty dedicated to teaching, scholarship, and student development, the Cotsakos College of Business provides a quality business education to its students. The College offers a curriculum designed to enable a diverse student body, primarily from the State of New Jersey, to advance both academically and professionally.

Degree Programs

The Cotsakos College of Business offers seven undergraduate bachelor of science (B.S.) business degree programs—B.S. in accounting, B.S. in finance, B.S. in financial planning, B.S. in global business, B.S. in management, B.S. in marketing, and B.S. in professional sales; the College also offers a bachelor of arts (B.A.) degree in economics. Students of all majors throughout the University may also choose to simultaneously pursue a minor in the area of accounting, economics, or professional sales. Additionally, the College offers a minor in business administration which is available to students who are pursuing majors outside the college but are nevertheless interested in picking up a basic set of skills in business.

All degree programs feature a curriculum that is balanced between coursework in the major, related business courses, and the University Core Curriculum. The program

  • requires the completion of core courses in the major, thus preparing students to pursue careers in the area of study;
  • mandates the successful completion of related coursework that provides coverage in all areas that form the context for business; and
  • stresses a well-diversified University Core Curriculum, including specific courses that enhance public speaking skills, introduce behavioral sciences, and increase competency in analytical and mathematical sciences.

In all of these programs, we adhere to the following four principles of business education: academic excellence, professional enrichment, technological competency, and the development of communication skills and contemporary perspectives. Finally, we also believe that all our students must be contributing members of society.

Academic Excellence

The Cotsakos College of Business continually updates and revises its curriculum, both proactively and in response to the dynamic changes in the business environment so that it remains both competitive and contemporary. Outcomes assessment is regularly performed, and inputs from students and other stakeholders are utilized to continually improve both course content and program/curricular offerings.

Professional Enrichment

The College integrates co-curricular and extra-curricular activities into its academic programs for the purposes of (a) increasing student awareness concerning the future impact of their professional development; (b) enhancing the students' appreciation for and development of requisite skill sets as they apply to respective job markets; and (c) providing networking opportunities between students and leading business professionals in the field. Students are strongly encouraged to participate in professional enrichment programs. Bonus points are earned by students in any business course where professional enrichment activities are incorporated.

In addition, students may attend numerous, professionally oriented symposia, forums, and presentations by guest speakers that the College sponsors or co-sponsors. Such activities promote the professional development of the student, and most of these activities earn enrichment points.

Technological Competency

The College enhances its academic offerings by integrating technology throughout the curriculum. Students are expected to be or become familiar with Microsoft Office. Students are also exposed to proprietary software packages across the business/finance curriculum in order to increase familiarity and provide hands-on experience with the type of technology and decision support tools that are utilized in the professional business arena. All business students, regardless of their major, have the opportunity to use such software tools, data streams, and databases for the purpose of conducting financial and economic data analyses in the Global Financial Services Institute Financial Learning Center. Students may also enhance their communication and presentation skills via the technology available in the professional sales laboratory.

Communication Skills and Contemporary Perspectives

The College integrates reading, writing, and speaking throughout and across the curriculum. While all three components are not necessarily addressed in every class, the natural progression through the business curriculum exposes the student to each of these components with a continuity that merges the three for the purposes of (a) enhancing information acquisition skills through reading and listening; (b) providing opportunities to learn, practice, and enhance communication skills through writing and speaking requirements; and (c) remaining current in the field through required readings that are exclusive of textbook reading assignments.

Capstone Courses

In order to ensure that business majors are able to integrate knowledge across business functional areas and incorporate ethical considerations into decision-making, all business majors must take a capstone course in their majors followed by a common comprehensive business strategy capstone course. Typically, each capstone course incorporates essential discipline-specific knowledge to assure that the learning goals of each major are being met. Course requirements include participant centered learning approaches such as case studies, simulations, and so on. The following are the various capstone courses.

Experiential Learning

Students interested in gaining professional work experience should consider participating in the internship, practicum, and/or job shadowing alternatives. Internship and practicum experiences earn credit hours; job shadowing is counted as professional enrichment activity. Eligibility for experiential learning activities is based on one or more of the following: GPA (overall and major), junior or senior standing, and course prerequisites.

Internships are individualized, structured work experiences where a student is placed in an organization for the purpose of working under a supervisor and gaining hands-on experience in the area of interest.

A practicum is a guided work experience conducted within a group framework, where groups provide consultation to businesses and other organizations, under the mentorship of a faculty sponsor.

Job Shadowing entails a one-to-one linkage between the College's top students and a business leader in the area of interest. The student meets with a business leader on-site and "shadows" the business leader at the workplace for one day. This provides the student with an inside glimpse of what the profession of choice entails, and an opportunity to spend one day in the company of a professional in the workplace.

Independent Study

An independent study may be pursued in an area of study not embodied within the catalog's listed set of course offerings provided by the Cotsakos College of Business. Eligible students must have a GPA of 3.0 (overall and in the major) and have attained junior status. Students should contact their department chair for specific details concerning the procedure to be followed, additional eligibility requirements, and the appropriate application of credit hours to the major.

Honors Program

The Cotsakos College of Business offers students with high academic potential the opportunity to enhance their studies in the Honors Program. Participating students explore their interests under the supervision of faculty members via enhanced experiences such as a two-semester research project and participation in a small-scale consulting project with an actual client.

Study Abroad

The Cotsakos College of Business strives to provide its students with a global perspective and hence supports students' efforts to complete, as practicable, part of their degree requirements abroad. Interested students are encouraged to contact their academic advisor well in advance of their planned time abroad to discuss issues such as transferability of coursework taken abroad.

Global Financial Services Institute Financial Learning Center

The Financial Learning Center, housed within the Global Financial Services Institute at the Cotsakos College of Business is a realization of state-of-the-art, technology-enhanced education at its finest. As one of only a handful of technology-equipped learning facilities that function as a trading room while simultaneously enabling cutting-edge pedagogical and community outreach initiatives, the Global Financial Services Institute Financial Learning Center is the hub of all electronic business information exchange and analysis for the Cotsakos College of Business and its partners.

The College's business curriculum requirements are designed to train students, regardless of their major, in the use of financial software packages. Courses such as the required business core course in corporate finance utilize the Global Financial Services Institute Financial Learning Center. Students who pursue advanced coursework in finance especially benefit from utilizing the Global Financial Services Institute Financial Learning Center to assist in the analysis and valuation of equity securities and corporations, fixed income and leveraged securities, derivative products, mutual funds, real assets, and international securities markets, among other things. Finance students are most extensively exposed to the workings of a trading room. Here they develop decision-making skills by working on research projects analyzing live data feeds such as Thomson Reuters using a variety of statistical software packages. This unique, hands-on curriculum gives undergraduate business majors a distinct edge over their competitors upon graduation. In addition, a selected group of students manage a real money Student Managed Portfolio under the broad supervision of an advisory board composed of Wall Street professionals and select faculty members.

The Global Financial Services Institute Financial Learning Center also functions as a laboratory for academic research and scholarship for faculty and students in a number of fields where analytical processes are utilized

In addition to the opportunities that the Global Financial Services Institute Financial Learning Center provides for students and researchers, it offers training seminars and forums for community leaders, corporate partners, and students from around the globe and use of its enhanced technology allows distance education.

Russ Berrie Institute for Professional Sales

This Institute, housed within the Cotsakos College of Business, is dedicated to advancing the field of professional sales by providing high-quality technology intensive educational opportunities, consulting, and professional development activities for both students and members of the business community.

Students may enroll in coursework offered through the Department of Professional Sales for the purpose of either (a) enhancing their exposure to issues associated with professional sales; (b) pursuing the Bachelor of Science in the professional sales degree program; or (c) completing coursework towards a minor. Courses offered in the Department of Professional Sales utilize the state-of-the-art Professional Sales Laboratory, which features digital video technology for the purpose of supplementing classroom experience, providing active hands-on learning opportunities, and enhancing communication and negotiation skills.

Working sales professionals are also served through the behavioral sales laboratory facilities of the Russ Berrie Institute. Both the Institute's academic and professional program designs are based on the merger of scholarly academic theory and rigorous professional practice, and focus on the provision of skills that represent requisite competencies for highly effective performance in sales and sales management positions. Faculty in the Department of Professional Sales, in addition to holding advanced degrees in the discipline, possess professional sales experience and thus provide programs that reflect real-world applications and hands-on learning approaches.

Small Business Development Center

As part of a statewide and national system, the University's Small Business Development Center (SBDC) implements efficient and effective business practices that bolster New Jersey's emerging small businesses, and constantly develops and refines the tools and resources small businesses need to succeed in today's increasingly diverse and competitive environment. The SBDC provides consulting and training services to the small business sector in the region. In cooperation with the Cotsakos College of Business and the Center for Continuing and Professional Education, the Center sponsors symposia, seminars, and forums that address numerous issues related to small business development and operation. Topics include, but are not limited to:

  • business start-ups;
  • strategic planning;
  • financial management;
  • e-commerce;
  • accounting/bookkeeping;
  • global/international markets;
  • marketing research and strategy; and
  • women and minorities in business.

Some of these activities contribute to the professional enrichment requirement for all undergraduate business majors, and address topics of interest for students interested in understanding entrepreneurship. The Small Business Development Center also co-sponsors practicum learning experiences, where small groups of students provide consultation to managers of small businesses. These credit-earning experiences familiarize students with the actual decision-making issues faced by organizations, employ group dynamics, and provide the opportunity to integrate academic theory and technology with business practice. Academic Policies

Admission

Students admitted to the University with no college credit attempted may enroll in the Cotsakos College of Business upon entry.

Continuing or transfer students who are not admitted upon entry may apply for admission upon successful completion of twelve credits of college coursework. Students will be admitted to the Cotsakos College of Business only if they meet each of the following academic standards:

a. Overall grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or greater for all college level credit attempted,

b. GPA of 2.0 or greater for all business core and major area credit hours attempted, and

c. No more than two grades below C- for all business courses attempted.

Retention

Once enrolled in the Cotsakos College of Business, students who are found to be in violation one or more of the standards stated under "Admission" are placed on Cotsakos College of Business probation for one semester (fall or spring). Upon completion of this one probationary semester, students who are still found to be in violation of one or more of the standards are dismissed from the College of Business. Dismissal from the Cotsakos College of Business does not necessarily imply dismissal from the University. Students dismissed from the College are permitted to retake business courses in which they received low grades, but are restricted from taking most other Cotsakos College of Business courses. Dismissed students who subsequently demonstrate improvement to the extent that their grades adhere to the aforementioned standards may apply for re-admission to the College of Business by contacting the Dean's office.

Graduation

In addition to all other University graduation requirements, students in the Cotsakos College of Business must adhere to all academic standards stated under "Admission."

Degree Requirements

In order to keep the curriculum competitive and contemporary, degree requirements may change over time. A student must fulfill the degree requirements that were in effect at the time of admission.

Special rules may apply to transfer students dependent on their individual situation. Transfer students from New Jersey community colleges in particular are encouraged to work closely with their advisor/counselor at the two-year institution in order to optimize the transferability of community college coursework, e.g., as it relates to the Statewide Transfer Agreement.

Degree Residency Requirements

  1. At least 50 percent of all business credit hours required for the B.S. degree must be earned through completed coursework at the Cotsakos College of Business.
  2. At least 50 percent of all business credit hours that satisfy the major business credit-hour requirement must be earned through completed coursework at the Cotsakos College of Business.
  3. No business course may be taken for credit at another institution once a student is enrolled in the Cotsakos College of Business.
  4. No course credit for coursework completed at a two-year institution (community/county college) may be transferred in as 3000- or 4000-level business courses within the Cotsakos College of Business programs.
  5. Any 3000- and 4000-level business course taken at another institution is transferable into the undergraduate business curriculum only (a) if the course was taken with a grade of C or better at an AACSB-accredited four-year institution; and (b) upon approval, with permission from the student's department chair and College dean. Two specific courses, ACCT 3110 (Intermediate Accounting I) and FIN 3200 (Corporate Finance) further require a grade of B or better to be transferable into the undergraduate business curriculum.
  6. Students pursuing the B.S. degree as a second bachelor's degree must complete a minimum of 30 new credits in residence at William Paterson University, and must fulfill, either through credit hours earned or transferred, all common business program core requirements, major requirements, and required directed elective coursework.

Curriculum Requirements

The Cotsakos College of Business majors may pursue a B.S. in accounting, a B.S. in finance, a B.S. in financial planning, a B.S. in global business, a B.S. in management, a B.S. in marketing, B.S. in professional sales, or a B.A. in economics. Each program requires the completion of at least 120 credit hours.

University Core Curriculum

All undergraduate business majors must complete the University Core Curriculum in addition to the major requirements listed below. Additional requirements such as directed electives and University-mandated courses and requirements as well as minimum number of credits requirements must be met.

COMMON BUSINESS PROGRAM CORE............................................ 33 CREDITS

Please note that the following curriculum requirements only apply to the Bachelor of Science in business degrees (and not the B.A. in economics degree).

All undergraduate business majors must complete the common business program core (with the exceptions noted below). This set of courses exposes students to the fundamental areas of core competency in business. Completion of this core provides the foundation from which upper-level courses in the chosen major may be pursued. The courses that must be completed in the common business program core are:

MAJOR

REQUIREMENTS ....................................... 18-21 CREDITS

Undergraduate business majors with the exception of B.S. in accounting students must complete the 18-credit-hour requirement in their respective major. Students pursuing a B.S. in accounting must complete the 21-credit-hour requirement for accounting majors. These courses build upon the common business program core and offer an in-depth exposure to advanced material related to the area of study.

ADDITIONAL DIRECTED ELECTIVE COURSE
REQUIREMENTS............................................ 6-9 CREDITS

Undergraduate business majors with the exception of B.S. in accounting students must complete this 9-credit-hour requirement for their respective major. Students pursuing a B.S. in accounting must complete this 6-credit-hour requirement for accounting majors. These courses are periodically updated to reflect current trends in business education. The designated courses are chosen by the appropriate department and may be either business courses or courses from related areas.

MINOR IN BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION

The minor in business administration is only available to students who are not pursuing a B.S. degree in the Cotsakos College of Business.

Students will be required to complete the following courses (total of 18 credits) with a minimum GPA of 2.0:
