Jazz for Music Educators 7/14-7/25/14
This special Jazz for Music Educators course is ten intense afternoons of lecture/discussion, improvisation and performance for music teachers. Topics covered will include: overview of the stylistic periods of jazz and major jazz figures; score analysis; pedagogy of improvisation; the adjudication process and “troubleshooting” the public school jazz ensemble; history of jazz education; conducting technique; festival clinic presentations.
Student Learning Outcomes
Students will:
• Understand and aurally recognize the basic characteristics of the style periods of jazz, and be able to aurally identify the major figures in jazz
• Aurally recognize the major jazz forms, including blues and popular song forms
• Comprehend the basic principles of jazz improvisation, and how to communicate them clearly to beginning improvisers
• Be able to demonstrate the basic techniques of jazz conducting
• Recognize performance problems and issues in public school jazz ensembles, and be able to diagnose and correct them

There is no required text for this course. Readings will be taken from the following selected texts, as well as other materials photocopied for this class by the instructor:

Format
Some classes will follow a “traditional” lecture/discussion format, while others will be performance oriented. Please see the following page for specific schedule information.
Attendance
It is imperative that students attend all classes, and that each class begins on time. Since this is an accelerated graduate course, the instructor will only allow absences for extreme circumstances. An excused absence requires a documented medical excuse signed by a doctor.
Grading –
Unit outlines: 40%; Observations/Reviews: 20%; Clinic Presentation: 20%; Class participation and attendance: 20%
No Grading for student taking the course as Non-Credit Certificate Program
